Today Burn Station got a good reception from the students of DKIT. We setup in college early to make sure we had no problems like yesterday in The Marshes. We used up 100 CD's over the last two days, and the majority of them were distributed today to students. The students also seemed interested in the concept behind Burn Station which made the day interesting as the team spent a lot of time talking to students. The team did two interviews today at college, one was for a local newspaper the Dundalk Leader and the second was for some 3rd years Cultural Studies students. Over all i think the whole project was a success as we have distributed a lot of music which iam sure anyone off our artists in our Burn Station database would be very pleased with. The concept behind Burn Station was also spread out to the public which is another good side effect of the event. Everyone in the team was highly motivated and all worked very hard and collaborated together to make the day a success.

Burn Station hits The Marshes

Today Burn Station was held in Santa's Grotto in The Marshes shopping center. It took a while to get going, then we had to get free music out to the people. We got a mixed reaction from the public as a lot of people did not want a free music CD,but some did and they got involved in the Burn Station kiosk.

We had a radio interview last nite on Dundalk Fm , it went well and we got a lot of information across in a short time frame. On Tuesday morning we are starting Burn Station in the Marshes , from Santas grotto which should be easy for people to find.

I attempted to make a stamper as a cheap and fast method of getting our logo onto the cd's but it wasn't very successful.

At last we have Burn Station installed and working :) woohoo, a lot of work between both teams and Kieran is the reason for our success , and a bit of copy and paste :P, Kieran had Burnstation working on his laptop, with some software he was able to repackage his system configuration into a boot DVD, which then allowed booth teams to make a clone of his system. The work did not finish there as a lot more terminal Linux code had to be put into the system in order for the CD burner to work and to get Burn Station to use our downloaded music. I did a test CD today and it plays so we have lift off ;)

Also today the team spent a lot of time printing posters for the promotion of the Burn Staion day next week. They put posters in strategic locations around the college for maximum exposure.

Today we found out that our Burn Station project is going into the Marshes in 2 weeks time around the 27th October. The team still have a lot of work to do, we still need to get our media into Burn Station, to help with this some team members have installed VirtualBox onto their computers. This software allows you to emulate an operating system inside another operating system. This is great for testing Ubuntu and we hope to solve problems in the emulation and then bring our solutions into our Burn Station PC.

We also have found a good supply of cheap blank CD's, so all the team members will contribute some money for when we purchase them.

Still undecided on how we will put the creative commons license onto our music CD's, one idea was a sticker on the plastic cover with the information and maybe write the URL of the Burn Station license with permanent marker onto the CD.

The first drafts of the poster and flyer's should be ready soon as the team need to ok them before they go into print.

As we are now in an open space in the Marshes the team feel that our look and feel of the kiosk has become very important so wea re working on that too.

We finally got burnstation installed on to our PC . We did not format our PC as we previously discussed we just continued on hacking away at linux and we did something right. We think our problem was with databases and Mysql, but now we have another problem. We need to get burnstation to accept media from the official burnstation database. We hope that this will not be as time consuming as the last problem as we want to get testing burnstation as soon as possible.

The team have decided which creative commons license to use for our Burn Station project so now the team can start to download music.

We are still having problems installing Burn Station, the problem is with other software(LAMP) that you must install before Burn Station will work. One of the team member has installed Burn Station on their laptop so we know it is possible. To day we worked so much on one problem and made so many changes to our Ubuntu system that we think we have made the problem greater. If we cannot fix our problems by Friday the team might need to reinstall Ubuntu and begin to install LAMP and Burn Station again.

The team have decided on our logo for the Burnstation now we need to decide on the look and feel of our PC and kiosk.

We are still having problems installing Burn Station onto our PC, Barry the computer technician has not been able to install it on to a Ubuntu Linux system. This has lead the team to suggest alternative software for burning CD's (e.g.iTunes,Musicmatch). The other suggestion to solve this problem is to install a version of Debian Linux onto our PC, as it was originally the operation system used with Burn Station.

Ok so at the moment we are having trouble installing Burn Station on our newly formatted Linux system. This is the first time any of the team have ever come in contact with Linux and we are trying to come to terms with its code based computer language. Through a lot of work trawling Linux forums we have made little progress but we are learning all the time. A break through was made this afternoon with help from Kieran our lecturer and we think that Burn Station should be installed early next week so that we can get testing.

We have created a Dropbox account so that we can pool all the music we gather from the internet into one location.

The start

We are a group of DKIT students working on a group project called Burn Station. Burn Station is software that allows the general public to access and share license free music. In two weeks time we have to set up a Burn Station kiosk in the Marshes shopping center in Dundalk.

Well we got have just had two meeting so far as a group and have allocated jobs to group members. We have decided to use dropbox for media storage and we have created a gmail account (burnstationdkit@gamil.com) for communication between team members and the general public.

At the moment the team are trying to find a copyright license that covers the ability to share and distribute music files but people can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.

We also are working on our branding and logo design, as soon as we decided on that our promotion of the event will also begin as we have only two weeks to inform the public.

Today in class we installed ubuntu on to a PC which has a 40gb harddrive which we hope should be more that enough space for music files. Next we need to get the burn station software installed so that we can begin testing.
